Burry Port School, Carmarthenshire.

Conceived by the client, Carmarthenshire County Council, the pioneering scheme for Burry Port Community Primary School, brings together the towns once separate infant and junior schools on one central site, in a design that celebrates Welsh materials and embraces innovation.Set over three principal buildings, the project is a mix of refurbishment and new-build. The prominent new-build aspects include the first Passivhaus school building in Wales, as well as a separate, Brettstapel constructed elliptical pod for multi-use purposes, which unites the new and old elements of the school. In line with Passivhaus requirements, new junior years building is wrapped in continuous air-tight layer from the foundations-up. The elliptical pod building, constructed using the Brettstapel method, is one of the first examples of Brettstapel construction being used in the education sector in the UK. The technique makes use of Wales abundance of low-grade softwood, Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce.

Bushbury Hill Primary School

Bushbury Hill primary school was one of the first projects in the country to achieve Passivhaus certification in February 2012. The school was built to the same budget and completed in the same time frame as a traditional build. Due to the challenging nature of the site, there was extensive consultation with the school and its neighbours throughout the design and construction process.

Camden Passivhaus

Camden Passivhaus in Ranulf Road, designed by bere:architects and completed in April 2010, is Londons first Passivhaus. The project is a 118m2 single family house split over two floors. The primary objective of this project is to achieve a comfortable home for a young family, whilst minimising energy consumption. It contains two wild flower meadow roofs and a south facing garden enclosed by an ivy fence to increase local biodiversity. Healthy air and water quality is prioritised by using non-toxic materials; heat recovery ventilation and water filtration for drinking and bathing. Mains water use is supplemented by an underground water harvesting tank providing water for irrigation.

Cameron Close, Freshwater, Isle of Wight.

Cameron Close is a Passivhaus development in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. The development is made up entirely of affordable units, including 16 houses and 12 sheltered apartments on a 1.5 acre site. The development for Southern Housing Group aims to provide homes that are low on energy consumption yet comfortable and healthy for the residents to live in.The site plan creates attractive streets and public spaces and the homes are carefully orientated to provide a feeling of security whilst maintaining privacy. All the houses have front and back gardens and the apartments have generous, landscaped kitchen gardens to ensure plenty of private amenity space. The varying size of the houses and the flexibility of their plan will encourage a sustainable, cohesive community.Supplementary funding to achieve the Passivhaus standard was provided by Isle of Wight Council as part of their goal to become the most sustainable local authority in the UK by 2020.
