PassivHaus

Christow, Dartmoor.

The project has been led by the Christow Community Land Trust (CCLT), a voluntary collection of villagers, in partnership with local affordable housing provider, Teign Housing. The land was donated for 1 by Teignbridge District Council. Dartmoor National Park Authority supported the CLT through the planning process. This was the first Passivhaus project for the contractors and the client and provided a challenge to produce a quality product which met the requirements for Passivhaus. The 18 affordable dwellings comprise of two, three, and four bedroom houses & bungalows. 14 are available to rent as affordable housing and 4 have been sold on the open market. The timber framed homes have large window overhangs and solar thermal hot water. Annual heating and hot water bills are expected to be less than 100 per year.

City West Homes - Low Carbon Retrofit in the Queens Park Estate Conservation Area

This project will focus on a mid-terrace, 2-bed property in the heart of the Queens Park Conservation Area. This project will build on that experience, learning from both its obstacles and successes whilst seeking to apply those lessons within the more challenging context of a 59m2 Conservation Area property. Our approach to energy saving and CO2 reduction will follow a lean-clean-green hierarchy: seeking to minimise heat losses from the property thermal fabric and ventilation method; to supply residual space and water heating using replicable, low carbon technology; to minimise lighting energy loads; and finally to consider micro-generation using proven, renewable energy systems.

Claddens Holdings

Claddens Holdings is not only an exemplar of a low energy Passivhaus but is used as a workshop for woodworking and a safe space for counselling. The building used only natural materials inside and out to keep the home healthy as well as comfortable. Externally, natural slate and timber without treatment (which will weather to a silver grey) were used to continue the natural design.

Clapham Retrofit

This 4-storey semi-detached Grade II listed Victorian townhouse has been eco-retrofitted to a high standard of airtightness and thermal performance. The 170-year old, solid brick building has been internally retrofitted with over 9 types of insulation material, each a bespoke solution to localised performance requirements respecting the historic significance of the existing fabric. The existing sash windows and doors have been upgraded through the installation of double-glazed secondary glazing. High performance insulation materials together with careful airtightness and thermal bridge detailing have resulted in a historic building that is both highly energy efficient and more comfortable to live in.

Clapham Townhouse Retrofit

A complete refurbishment and retrofit of a Victorian cottage. This end of terrace house was extended and retrofitted to provide an exemplar development in energy efficiency and a test bed for various types of renewable technologies. Key to the sucess was a strategy of creating a thermally efficient and air tight building, coupled with an MVHR system to control ventilation and internal humidity.
